How it all started

Chicago knows the Rainbow Cone well. In 1926, Joseph “Grandpa Joe” Sapp, a Buick mechanic, and his wife Katherine opened an ice cream shop with a clever twist: instead of one flavor, their signature cone featured five sliced layers stacked together — chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), pistachio, and orange sherbet.

This colorful creation quickly became a Chicago classic, delighting generations with its unique blend of flavors. Nearly 100 years later, the Original Rainbow Cone is still a beloved city staple, and now it’s ready to bring a taste of Chicago to your doorstep, alongside Giordano’s famous deep-dish pizza.
